Welcome To The Home Page of The Sarasota Fern Society. If you aren't already a member, you are invited to join us.
Membership in the Society is open to anyone with an appreciation of ferns and does not require any prior experience in fern horticulture.
If you're new to our area, or new to growing ferns, you'll be pleased to learn that many species of ferns are very much at home here in West Central Florida, and that caring for them is not difficult. For example, the "Staghorn" fern at right (a platycerium bifurcatum) has been hanging in the yard of one of our members for almost 30 years and it has never received any special care. The fern now measures over six feet in diameter and continues to thrive despite so many years of benign neglect. This plant, in typical fern fashion, has added much beauty to its environment in exchange for very little effort on the part of its owner.
Of course, there are more difficult ferns to grow and there is a great deal of information to learn about fern horticulture in general. The Sarasota Fern Society is an excellent way to expand both your fern collection and your knowledge about them. Come join us!
